About the event

To help Parties and observers review the addendum paper to the working document on DSI as well as the related information documents*, the Secretariat organized a webinar to introduce these documents with the Co-Chairs of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (WG2020).

*Update of digital sequence information on genetic resources in relevant international processes and policy debates (CBD/WG2020/3/INF/1);  Views and new information on policy approaches, options or modalities for digital sequence information on genetic resources (CBD/WG2020/3/INF/7); and Co-leads' report on the work of the Informal Co-Chairs' Advisory Group on digital sequence information on genetic resources (CBD/WG2020/3/INF/8).

To accommodate Parties, other governments and relevant organizations in different time zones, the first session was held on Thursday, 3 February 2022 (8 am - 9:30 am EST) and the second on Friday, 11 February 2022 (12a.m. – 1:30am EST). Please note that the second session took place at midnight, the night of Thursday 10 February in the Eastern time zone of North America. The webinar lasted one hour and a half, including time for questions and answers.

Context

The first part of the third meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (OEWG2020-3) held from 23 August to 3 September 2021 considered the working document on digital sequence information on genetic resources (DSI)(CBD/WG2020/3/4) [PDF, 7.34 Mb] and discussed the linkages between DSI and the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, potential elements of a draft recommendation on DSI, and areas of potential convergence and of apparent divergence, all of which can be found on the meeting website as addendums to the report of the meeting.

Additionally, an informal Co-Chairs advisory group on DSI was established according to the agreed terms of reference (Appendix to Annex V in CBD/WG2020/3/5).

The addendum paper to the working document on digital sequence information on genetic resources (CBD/WG2020/3/4/ADD1) contains a summary of the co-leads’ report on the informal Co-Chairs’ advisory group, and a section on elements of a recommendation for consideration during the resumed third meeting of the OEWG2020. Additionally, 3 annexes address the summarized updated policy options, criteria and sub-criteria to be considered in the first step of the multi-criteria analysis and summarized in a decision matrix.
