About the event

The post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which will contain a new set of global goals and targets for biodiversity, is currently being negotiated under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and is expected to be finalized and adopted at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD in Kunming, China, in 2022. The framework includes a draft monitoring framework [PDF. 428 Kb] with proposed headline indicators to track progress towards the goals and targets.

The proposed headline indicators in the draft monitoring framework are relatively generic and are intended to cover a wide range of elements of nature and biodiversity, including in marine and coastal areas. Furthermore, they are intended to complement existing monitoring and reporting processes. Therefore, it is important to

• (i) identify the specific aspects of the indicators relevant to marine and coastal biodiversity,
• (ii) indicate where existing monitoring and reporting processes can address these indicators and
• (iii) highlight the information needs for the indicators and existing information in the marine realm, so that Parties can effectively report against the indicators with respect to their marine and coastal ecosystems.

Specific advice on this issue is being provided to inform the deliberations on the monitoring framework, including through an information document provided to the deliberations of the 3rd meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework: Marine input to headline indicators of the draft post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (CBD/WG2020/3/INF/4) [PDF, 886 Kb].

In support of the ongoing deliberations on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, this webinar provided a forum to discuss the headline indicators of the monitoring framework for the draft post-2020 GBF, in the context of marine and coastal areas. It explored and reviewed specific marine and coastal biodiversity aspects of the indicators and the monitoring framework and discussed on other relevant existing reporting and assessment processes that could be used to respond to the indicators in marine and coastal areas and contribute to the implementation of the post-2020 framework.

The webinar lasted one hour and a half, including time for questions and answers.
