About the event
This webinar, co-organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, introduced the Framework for Action on Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture approved by the FAO Council in December of last year. The webinar provided an opportunity to discuss the implementation of the Framework and its possible contribution to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. The webinar was conducted in English and lasted one hour and a half, including time for questions and answers.
Context
The report on The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture, developed under the aegis of the FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, revealed alarming trends in the decline of species and ecosystems underpinning agri-food systems. The loss of both domesticated and wild biodiversity, at genetic, species and ecosystem level, poses a severe threat to the productivity and resilience of crop, livestock, forestry, fishery and aquaculture systems.
In response to the findings of the report, the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture negotiated over a period of five years the Framework for Action on Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture [PDF, 411 Kb] which was adopted in December 2021 by the 168th Session of the FAO Council. The Framework, which addresses biodiversity for food and agriculture as a whole and is voluntary in nature, aims to improve the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food and agriculture at genetic, species and ecosystem levels, fostering systematic and integrated approaches. It represents an important commitment from the agricultural sectors to strengthen efforts on biodiversity and sustainable agriculture and constitutes an important cornerstone for the implementation of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
