Questionnaire on “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB) global study
The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is a partner in the important global study on “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB), which is a cooperative effort of researchers from North and South, led by Pavan Sukhdev, supported by the CBD Secretariat and funded by the European Union and several governments. TEEB draws attention to the local and global benefits of biodiversity and to the social and economic costs of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. The initiative to prepare this study was welcomed at the CBD ninth Conference of the Parties (COP9) and Parties were encouraged to contribute. The results of the TEEB study will be presented at CBD COP10 next year in Nagoya.

Submission of further case studies on the Ecosystem Approach for the Ecosystem Approach Sourcebook.
In recommendation XII/1, paragraph 2(b)(ii), the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) requested the Executive Secretary enhance support for updating of the Source Book through the inclusion of additional case studies that relate to all the programmes of work of the Convention and all economic sectors and that demonstrate the benefits and trade-offs of the use of the ecosystem approach in achieving the 2010 target and the Millennium Development Goals.

Paragraph 14(a) of decision VII/4, requests the Executive Secretary to compile, for consideration by the Conference of the Parties at its eighth meeting, information on mountain ecosystems and their role as water suppliers and examples of transferable technologies relevant to the implementation of the revised programme of work on inland water biodiversity also relevant to mountain ecosystems, and ensure that this information is considered in the implementation of the programme of work on mountain biological diversity and taking into account, inter alia, the work of the Committee on Forestry of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
