Notification 2019-008

Initial discussion document on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

Dear Madam/Sir,

In decision 14/34, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted a comprehensive and participatory process for the preparation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The process requires that an initial discussion document summarizing and analysing the initial views of Parties and observers be made available in January 2019.

In line with the request, I am pleased to inform you that an initial discussion document on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework has been prepared, with the guidance of the co-chairs of the Open-Ended Inter-Sessional Working Group to support the preparation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, and is being made available for review. This document reviews relevant decisions, summarizing the initial views of partners and observers and provides a number of questions to stimulate the discussion. In addition, a supporting information document provides a comparative analysis of the initial views received. Both documents are available at https://www.cbd.int/post2020/. Parties and observers are encouraged to provide further views on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework by sending comments to secretariat@cbd.int by 15 April 2019.

Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
