2003 Biodiversity Day Around the World

Iran (Islamic Republic of)

A rainy spring after several dry years provided a great feel for the 2003 celebration in Iran of International Day for Biological Diversity.

Among the activities

  1. Launching the governmental project on "Biodiversity Capacity Building"
  2. Launching 2nd version of national biodiversity web site (www.biodiversity.ir)
  3. Holding the "8th Genetic Congress of Iran" and an exhibition from 22-24 May
  4. Publishing a handbook edited by Dr. Mostafa PANAHI titled "Biodiversity and Traditional Knowledge (a glance on practical methods of protection of traditional knowledge for conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity)"
  5. Publishing a handbook edited by Prof. Ali MEISAMI titled " Paleontology of Invertebrates" (edited for the National Museum of Natural History of Iran)
  6. Publishing a pocket book (mini CD included) edited by Ms. Masoomeh BAYATI titled "Introduction of Biodiversity Web Sites in Internet"
  7. Reprinting several brochures to introduce different aspects of Biodiversity
  8. Reprinting "Biodiversity for Decision Makers" book on recycled papers
  9. Reprinting a new format of compendium book (CD include) titled "Biodiversity Conservation Planning In Iran"
  10. Reprinting the Persian-English poster of "22 May, International Day for Biodiversity" with CBD, UNDP, GEF, IUCN and DoE's logos
  11. Producing a new poster on biodiversity in "straw" style
  12. Several radio addresses on Tehran and National radio stations on issues related to biodiversity
  13. Providing texts or technical supporting to several biodiversity - related articles in national newspapers
  14. Free admission to visit the natural history museums (mmtt.museum.com)
  15. Setting up promotional billboards in the field of biodiversity along highways

All of the above-mentioned publications were sent to general authorities of environment in 28 provinces, universities, NGOs and related agencies across the country for mass distribution.

Beside these, NGOs and provincial offices of the Department of Environment in different cities celebrated this Day by conducting various awareness program like local festivals, theater, folklore concert, painting/drawing competitions, TV programs, Radio interviews, special pages or editions of newspapers or magazines, free nature tours, etc....
