Enabling the mining sector to take action on biodiversity
This webinar was part of the
Communities of Practice Webinar Series, hosted by the CBD Secretariat to support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the mainstreaming of biodiversity within and across sectors.
Specifically, this webinar focused on the
mining sector, and brought the
UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the
International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) to co-lead a conversation on best practices and lessons learned in this crucial sector for biodiversity. Among other points, the discussion addressed how different actors (e.g. governments, standard setters, financial institutions, mining businesses) contribute to creating enabling conditions for responsible management of biodiversity in the mining sector, with examples of actions on biodiversity being taken by mining companies.
Discussions also addressed mitigation hierarchy and other actions that progressively reduce negative impacts on biodiversity, increase positive impacts, reduce biodiversity-related risks in the sector, and promote actions to ensure sustainable patterns of production.
The webinar was held on
May 26 2026, between 8:00 - 9:30AM EDT. It's recording can be found at the CBD YouTube channel,
