About one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted.This was revealed by Dr René Castro-Salazar, Assistant Director-General in charge of Climate, Biodiversity, Land and Water Department at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).
