Australia’s Indigenous peoples have been disenfranchised from control of their water. Despite holding recognised rights to over 40 per cent of Australia’s land, Indigenous people hold less than one per cent of its water. Australia’s current water framework, the National Water Initiative (NWI), has not and cannot support Aboriginal approaches, as long as it avoids recognising Aboriginal interests, rights, and responsibilities to water.
