It is widely agreed that, if we are to halt and reverse the escalating trend in the destruction of biodiversity, an effective system of protected areas must be in place in every country and throughout the world. However, the existing system of protected areas is not comprehensive, adequately representative of biodiversity, or extensive enough to do the job. Of equal concern is the fact that a large percentage of already-established protected areas is so poorly managed or inadequately financed that the areas are losing the very biodiversity they were designed to protect. This dire situation affects not only the Earth’s land surface but the oceans as well, where a mere less than 0.5% of surface area is protected. The need for action to correct these deficiencies is urgent.

This side event will focus on areas where protection for biodiversity has failed, the lessons learnt and the way forward. The core philosophy of the CBD and its mandate will be discussed and ways forward presented.

For further information see www.greenpeace.org
