This side event will provide an opportunity for participants to look at the alternative ways Countdown 2010 addresses the implementation gap. Countdown 2010 has used the 2010 biodiversity target as an opportunity for joint action by providng focus, direction and additional commitments. In just a few years, Countdown 2010 partners have established a strong network bringing together stakeholders from different sectors and continents. Each partner commits additional efforts to tackle the causes of biodiversity loss. The secretariat – hosted by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) – facilitates and encourages action, promotes the importance of the 2010 biodiversity target and assesses progress towards 2010.
