Marine Biodiscovery in Australia - how a government research organisation juggles public interest with commercial reality

Organizer
Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS)

Date and Time
2 December 2003 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Second meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-Sharing (WGABS 2)

The Australian Insitute of Marine Science undertakes marine biodiscovery research on Australia's mega biodiversity. It is a government research organisation supported by taxpayer funding with a clear public good mandate. However, it is also required to commercialise its research outcomes, and to this end must enter into deals with industry on commercial terms. This side event will present and discuss the practical issues influencing satisfaction of these two objectives.
