Meeting
Ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 9)

Recognising the vast biological wealth of the Amazon Region, the eight Member Countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), with the support of UNCTAD and the Regional Amazon Program OTCA/DGIS/GTZ, have developed a sustainable development programme focused on the sustainable use of the Amazon biodiversity and tailored to the region's human development needs. The Amazon Biotrade Program provides a regional strategic framework to facilitate the sustainable use of the Amazon biodiversity through technology transfer, enhanced local entrepreneurship, exchange of scientific and technical information, and development of policy instruments and positive economic incentives. The Programme aims at generating social and economic benefits for local communities by creating the necessary conditions at the regional level for the development and strengthening of promising sectors of Biotrade products and services.
