<br><b>Key biodiversity areas</b> are places of international importance for the conservation of biodiversity through protected areas and other governance mechanisms. <br><br>This side event will help explain the key biodiversity areas approach, and how it is being used to determine priority sites for conservation. The key biodiversity areas approach can be used as a tool to identify national systems of globally important sites for conservation towards the fulfillment of Article 8(a) of the CBD. In particular, the event will discuss how the key biodiversity areas approach is relevant to implementing the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and the programme of work on protected areas to be adopted at COP-7. <br><br> Presenters will include the Chair of SBSTTA-9 and representatives of the Japanese Ministry of Environment, Nature Kenya, BirdLife International, Plantlife International, and Conservation International
