<p>The need for consultancy for the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol is extremely high in developing countries. In 2000, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) launched the German Biosafety Capacity Building Initiative for the Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol. Within this initiative, various partners are receiving support to help realise this protocol at national level and to assess independently the social, economic and ecological risks of GMOs.
