In recent years a whole new set of environmental management buzzwords have emerged: ecoregional approaches to development, landscape approaches, the ecosystem approach, integrated catchment management, and community-based natural resource management. But many claim these are no more than fancy new labels for the same old product. This key side event will examine lessons from the past and suggest how the ecosystem approach can be revitalized and made relevant to both forests and inland fisheries.

Speakers:
Dr. Bruce Campbell from the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) will address how science should reinvent itself by embracing uncertainty, operating on multiple scales and meeting the challenges presented by multiple stakeholders with often contrasting needs.

Dr. Alphis Ponniah of the WorldFish Center will report on the recent Penang Statement on Adopting an Ecosystem Approach to Inland Fisheries and its recommendations to promote greater stakeholder participation, encourage greater cross-sectoral cooperation and combining inter-disciplinary research with local knowledge.

Dr. Mohd Nordin Hasan from IUCN who will provide an overview of what is now needed to move the ecosystem approach from a set of theoretical principles into on-the-ground practice.
