Meeting
Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

In this session, nature-oriented river works, which started 20 years ago in Japan, will be reviewed first with various examples for the purpose of sharing knowledge among international participants. Then the discussion will cover how the works can contribute to the post 2010 Strategic Goal B, “reduce the direct pressures on biodiversity and promote sustainable use”, as well as the Target 5, “by 2020, the loss and degradation of forests and other natural habitats is halved”. Results of experiments will be presented to show how the ecotone structures influence fauna and flora. Recent revision of the river works standards to enhance biodiversity will be exemplified. State-of-the-art fishway technologies and alien species control measures will also be covered. The achievements and challenges remaining will be discussed. Finally, scope for further elaborations will be discussed with international perspectives.
