BREAKING BOUNDARIES FOR BIODIVERSITY EXPANDING THE POLICY AGENDA TO HALT BIODIVERSITY LOSS

Organizer
Netherlands Environmental Assessment Bureau

Date and Time
28 October 2010 16:30 - 18:0

Meeting
Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

Biodiversity loss occurs all over the world, particularly in the tropics. However, northern countries also are responsible for the loss of biodiversity in southern countries, as a consequence of trade. National efforts alone were not successful to slow down biodiversity loss, and thus we have to think about other strategies. Expanding the biodiversity policy agenda to include sustainable trade between north and south, sustainable production processes, and local economic development, may reinforce the existing efforts. Not until biodiversity is awarded sufficient room within the space occupied by humans can we expect to stop biodiversity losses. We present options for maintaining biodiversity next to the often conflicting interests and demands relating to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, food consumption, biofuels and climate change.
