Organizer
UNDP-GEF

Date and Time
19 October 2010 16:30 - 18:0

Meeting
Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

The UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), established in 1992, has implemented more than 6,500 biodiversity projects at the community level in 120 countries worldwide. The side event will profile a joint initiative of the SGP and UNDP/GEF to capture and profile the portfolio of biodiversity-based products, commodities and community experiences pertaining to the sustainable use, marketing and certification of biodiversity. The side event will launch a catalogue of biodiversity-based products from SGP’s Latin American & Caribbean portfolio which demonstrates the undeniable linkage between the sustainable use of biodiversity, community empowerment and poverty reduction. The catalogue, which incorporates high quality studio photography, is the first of its kind and offers exciting possibilities in supporting marginalised communities in forming alliances with funders, retailers, researchers, governments and NGOs in order to improve their livelihoods and conserve biodiversity. Presenters will profile products included in the publication, and describe ongoing efforts to make the product and community profiles available on-line through a multi-stakeholder partnership in support of sustainable supply chains.”
