This event is jointly organised by the Environmental Law Institute (ELI), and the Southern Environmental & Agricultural Policy Research Institute (SEAPRI) to present a new book “African Perspectives on Genetic Resources: A Handbook on Laws, Policies and Institutions” edited by Kent Nnadozie, Robert Lettington, Carl Bruch, Susan Bass, and Sarah King; and jointly published by the Scientific, Technical and Research Commission of the African Union (AU-STRC), ELI and SEAPRI; 366 pages.

The research process and results that resulted in the book will be presented during the session, highlighting the lessons learned from the legal, policy and institutional approaches that twelve African countries - Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Senegal, the Seychelles, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia - have pursued in governing access to genetic resources and benefit sharing. These countries represent different legal, eco-geographical, developmental and cultural contexts throughout Africa. Drawing upon national and regional experiences - including those of the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) - the book surveys practical mechanisms and approaches for managing access to genetic resources and traditional knowledge, and benefit sharing including related intellectual property rights issues.

In addition to introducing the book, the organisers will also present the proposed follow up programme which focuses primarily on enhancing capacity in the region by building upon the lessons learned from the studies.

Contacts:
Kent Nnadozie knnadozie@icipe.org
www.icipe.org
or
Erica Pencak pencak@eli.org
www.eli.org
