Meeting
Sixteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice
The side event will review global progress with marine protected areas (MPAs) and explore practical and innovative ways to accelerate progress towards Aichi Biodiversity Target 11. At the side event we will present key findings from the Protected Planet Report 2012 on the current status and trends in MPAs. The report builds on the work of the CBD-mandated Biodiversity Indicators Partnership and includes a set of indicators of protected area coverage, governance, management, and biodiversity outcomes. UNEP-WCMC, IUCN and a wide range of partners will launch the report at the forthcoming IUCN World Conservation Congress and the CBD COP 11. Responding to paragraph 76 of CBD Decision X/29, at the side event we will also present preliminary findings of practical and innovative ways to accelerate progress with marine protection in underrepresented areas, making use of examples from Spanish LifeWeb-funded MPA projects and the EU-funded HERMIONE deep sea research project. The side event will culminate in a plenary discussion about how to accelerate progress to meet the protected areas target for the marine environment by 2020.
