<br><b>Main Presenters:</b><br><br>Dr. Anantha Kumar Duraiappah, Mr. Thierry de Oliveira and Dr. Walt Reid <br><br> The session will be in two main sections. The first session will present the work done to date by UNEP on addressing Poverty-ecosystem links. UNEP has been over the last two years been developing a conceptual framework addressing the poverty-ecosystem links. The conceptual framework combines the capability approach developed by Professor Amartya Sen with the ecosystem approach. The session will also cover some of the initial work done to date by UNEP and the coutry studies that are to begin in 2004. <br><br> The second session will focus on the role biodiversity plays in the poverty-ecosystem links. Issues relating to valuation of biodiversity and the use of the portfolio approach to addressing biodiversity, ecosystem servcies and poverty reduction will be explored. Ket challenges in using this approach will be presented and discussed.
