European Commission
Date and Time
15 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45
Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)
This side-event will discuss the application of safeguards for biodiversity in relation to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. It will provide an opportunity for scientists, policy makers and members of the business community to be informed and to influence the outcomes of current research and development funded by the EC. In particular, we will look at the monitoring and governance systems required for the implementation of REDD+ at local community and national levels and explore options for providing the operational indicators needed to report on the delivery of CBD 2020 targets to restore and safeguard ecosystems that provide essential services that contribute to health, livelihoods and well-being (Aichi Target 14) and to enhance the resilience of ecosystems and the contribution of biodiversity to carbon stocks (Aichi Target 15). The target audiences will be experts, research scientists, policy makers and business representatives interested in the quantification of ecosystem services linked to biodiversity. Format: four 10 minute presentations (2 research, 1 policy, 1 business) + general discussion.
