Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

The State of Arunachal Pradesh belongs to North Eastern part of India and the Himalayan region. Its biodiversity of plants and animals is acknowledged for its great richness, Arunachal Pradesh being one of the world's 35 biodiversity hotspots. The State particular interest also lies in its population, composed of one million people pertaining to many different traditional indigenous communities and detaining extensive traditional knowledge over their resources. Indeed, due to their remoteness and their bio-cultural uniqueness, the people of Arunachal Pradesh have developed very interesting models of efficient Natural Resource Management. This side event will present different of these approaches combining biodiversity protection and livelihood, such as the development of the State Strategy on Medicinal Plant conservation and sustainable use, community-based eco-tourism guidelines developed by the State Tourism Department and the preparation of bio-cultural protocols. The specific Rhododendron conservation will then provide a detailed case study completing this panorama. The side event will end on the release a publication on a case study on enterprise based conservation activity in Arunachal Pradesh.
