Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)
The world’s socio-economic systems strongly depend on biodiversity and ecosystems as these provide people with a wide range of benefits - known as ecosystem services. Nevertheless, ecosystems continue to deteriorate worldwide. This is largely due to the fact that most are unaware of their values and thus do not acknowledge them, as well as missing and/ or existing inad¬equate social and economic incentive mechanisms for their maintenance. The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) initiative draws attention to the global economic benefits of biodiversity and has developed guidance for policymakers and the business and civil society. Following the global example, several governments - among others Brazil, India and Germany - are committed to the implementation of TEEB studies and stakeholder processes at a national and sub-national level. On behalf of BMZ and BMU , GIZ is implementing TEEB projects with these two global development partners, which aim to strengthen capacities for mainstreaming biodiversity and ecosystem considerations into decision-making. This event will be focused on the design and governance structure of these TEEB initiatives. First results and achievements of implementation will be presented. Country representatives will share their experiences and discuss prevalent challenges as well as opportunities for a common learning process.
