THE ABS INITIATIVE: IMPLEMENTING THE NAGOYA PROTOCOL AT THE INTERFACE BETWEEN DIFFERENT POLICY AREAS - HOW TO MAKE IT WORK?

Organizer
ABS Capacity Development Initiative, GIZ

Date and Time
10 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

While international negotiations on certain aspects of the Nagoya Protocol are still going on, a big part of the attention of the ABS community has moved to national implementation. The ABS Capacity Development Initiative’s focus shifted accordingly to supporting the ratification and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol in Africa and since 2012 also in the Caribbean and the Pacific countries. This side event will present an introduction to the ABS Initiative and its work, an overview of its donors and partners, as well as its new concepts and processes, such as creating ABS value chains in cooperation with the private sector and developing appropriate ABS implementation concepts that are nationally and internationally coordinated. In this context, the Initiative sees it a high priority to mainstream the issue of ABS within the framework of the Strategic Plan into different relevant policy areas at the national level, by, for example, elaborating synergetic implementation approaches with other key processes, such as forest governance and protected area management. The Side Event at COP 11 is a perfect opportunity to learn about the ABS Initiative itself and its current work and discuss main issues to be tackled for successfully integrating ABS in the implementation of the Strategic Plan at regional and national level.
