Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

The TRUST Project is developing world best practice procedures for managing exchange of microbiological resources in concordance of the legal developments and principles of the Nagoya Protocol (NP). TRUST is imbedded in the culture collection community, which strives to provide for reliable raw material for research, in concordance of the legal developments and principles of the NP. Built on the MOSAICC code of conduct for culture collections, TRUST is a system for the transparent and efficient exchange of microbiological material, underpinning the sustainable utilization of microbiological resources through the NP. It meets the NP’s requirement for improved procedures, including the use of Internet-based communication systems. TRUST achieves this through integration with the World Federation of Culture Collections Global Catalogue of Microorganisms initiative (presented during another side-event), organizing the necessary flow of information with the ABS Clearing House Mechanism, Competent Authorities, and Checkpoints. It has designed policies for the preservation and distribution of microbiological resources to constitute the key parts of the TRUST system. All these elements will be presented during the side-event. Originally designed for scientific purposes in microbiology, the TRUST approach is instructive to policy makers and scientists alike. Significantly, it and can be adapted to other biological genetic resources.
