Meeting
Ad Hoc Open-Ended Working Group on Protected Areas
IUCN/TILCEPA and IIED invite indigenous peoples’ representatives, community representatives and CBD Parties representatives to explore key issues concerning the implementation of element 2 of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas. This side event will discuss the governance innovations that emerged from the World Parks Congress of Durban along with key examples of relevant new policy and practice (e.g., recognition of Community Conserved Areas—CCAs—and Protected Landscapes of indigenous peoples in various ecosystems, from dry lands to marine and coastal; support to co-management learning networks; processes that take advantage of all IUCN protected areas categories and governance types to strengthen national systems of protected areas). The event will also illustrate and distribute relevant guidelines, manuals and collections of case examples produced by IUCN, IIED and other organizations, including tools specifically designed for the implementation of element 2 of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas.
