A Preliminary Analysis of the World-Wide Need for Intellectual Property Assistance with Reference to Particular "hot spots".

The Public Interest Intellectual Property Advisors (PIIPA), a non-profit company located in Washington D.C., is conducting a survey of governmental and non governmental organizations, universities, and industry to determine the world-wide need of developing countries for no or low-cost intellectual property (IP) services. The survey will focus on biodiversity, health, traditional knowledge, and the environment. The purpose of the survey will be to identify "hot spots" of IP need. We propose that results will be presented for the first time at this side-event. Funding for this survey is being provided by the U.K. Department of International Development, and the survey instrument was drafted with assistance from individuals in the World Intellectual Property Organization, World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, South Centre, Science and Intellectual Property in the Public Interest (SIPPI), International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, Global Forum for Health Research, and others.
