Mainstreaming Local Authorities and Private Sector Participation in Biodiversity Conservation

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is developing a new capacity building program for local authorities on biodiversity. The objective of this program is to strengthen the role of local authorities in biodiversity conservation and management. To inaugurate this program UNITAR, in cooperation with the IUCN, will organize a “Summit of local authorities” in Curitiba, March 18-20 2006. This international Summit will bring together a hundred representatives of local authorities from all around the world with the aim of discussing their roles and responsibilities in biodiversity conservation and management and to identifying their training needs. The last session of the summit is planned to take place on Monday 20th March during the side event of the COP 8. The objective of the side event will be to present the major outcomes of the summit to the participants of the COP 8 and to foster interactive discussion and exchanges.
