Meeting
Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 8)

The goal of the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative (STI), to be completed within 20 years, is to chart and describe every multi-cellular species in Sweden. This includes a major effort in educating new taxonomists, specializing in groups where there is no competence available today. Beside the scientific output, all species will be described in a well-illustrated popular science book series: the Encyclopedia of the Swedish Flora and Fauna. This series will be the largest book production ever in Sweden, encompassing more than one hundred volumes. Connected to STI, The Swedish Species Information Centre has built the Internet-based Species Gateway where anybody can report species observations and also see reports of others and deduct synthesis on species distribution, population changes etc. Today, this database contains over 5 million observations, growing ever faster.
