Meeting
Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 8)

The deep oceans are home to tens of thousands of underwater islands some of which are richer in biodiversity than even those above sea level. New scientific findings reveal unique habitats and ecosystems on and around these underwater islands (seamounts), that support a complex web of marine life. Spanning the oceans, seamounts beyond areas of national jurisdiction are highly vulnerable to human activities, but lack protection from exploitation. These islands of the deep represent an important global genetic resource of potential benefit to all humankind. This side event examines what is known about life in the deep, the threats posed to it and the need for COP-8 and the UNGA to adopt immediate measures to protect it.
