Meeting
Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 8)

Rising levels of the “greenhouse gas” carbon dioxide (CO2), due to industrial activity and land-use changes, like deforestation, is considered the primary cause of climate change, which has been one of the main drivers of species extinction in the world, along with habitat loss and invasive alien species. The Society for Wildlife Research and Environmental Education (SPVS), in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, has developed and implemented three large forest conservation projects that promote biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation actions and community development in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná. These projects are financed by three major U.S.-based corporations over the course of 40 years. They are located in the Atlantic Forest domain, considered one of the world’s foremost conservation priorities. The objective of this event is to outline the multiple benefits generated by these innovative projects and how this conservation approach can play a key role on creating a synergy between the Biological Diversity and Climate Change Conventions. A presentation of the project’s components and results will be carried out by SPVS, and The Nature Conservancy will talk about the Climate Change initiatives all over the globe.
