Date and Time

Meeting
Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 8)

This side event builds on the previous session at the 11th SBSTTA (December 2005) and a meeting of the IUCN Ad Hoc Working Group on Sustainable Use Indicators (January 2006). The purpose of the side event is two-fold: • To promote greater understanding and clarity of the requirements and value of having indicators to monitor sustainable use of biodiversity resources; and • To establish mechanisms to engage more specialists and Parties in the development, testing and application of sustainable use indicators. Agenda Welcome and overview of approach and desired outcomes - Jon Hutton, Chair IUCN/SSC Sustainable Use Specialist Group The science of biodiversity indicators – Jonathan Baillie, Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London, UK Building markets while controlling exploitation – Lorena Jaramillo, Coordinator, National BioTrade Programme, Ecuador. Sustainable Use Indicators: an Indigenous peoples' perspective - Joji Carino, Tebtebba Foundation, Philippines Secretariat perspective: Next steps in the Cambridge Process – Markus Lehmann, CBD Secretariat Respondent – Barney Dickson, Head of International Policy, Flora and Fauna International Facilitated discussion – Steve Edwards, Special Advisor, IUCN – The World Conservation Union Examples of substantive issues that will be discussed are: • Can indicators for the sustainable use of species serve as indicators for sustainable use of ecosystems? • How can we discriminate between the impact of use and other factors such as climate change or invasive species on the status of species? • How do we assess the impact of the international trade in wildlife on the status of biodiversity? • What procedures can we adopt to assess sustainable use candidate indicators at different scales (e.g., local, regional, and global)? As in previous IUCN/SSC sponsored side events, participants will receive a summary of the key conclusions reached in the discussions. Refreshments will be served.
