Date and Time
23 March 2006 18:30 - 20:15

Meeting
Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 8)

The side event will feature a number of presentations from different parts of the world on the new biodiversity markets: the gene market, the biodiversity offset market, the carbon offset market and other market-based approaches to biodiversity conservation like ecotourism and certification. The presentations will highlight the potential social impacts of these markets, especially the impacts on community governance systems and the rights and needs of Indigenous Peoples, women and the monetary poor. The links between these new markets and public governance, corporate interests, trade liberalization and the pressure of international financial institutions will be highlighted as well. After the presentations there will be ample time for discussion about the social impacts of these new markets."
