The main objective of the event will be to present the experience of introducing the National Commission for the Sustainable Development of Peoples and Traditional Communities in Brazil as an initiative in the creation of spaces for the inclusion of indigenous peoples and local communities in the process of construction and decision making in Public Policies catering for these peoples and communities. Created in 2004, by means of the Decree of December 27th, 2004, the Commission holds among other tanks, that of proposing and guiding the necessary actions for the articulation, execution and consolidation of relevant public policies for the sustainable development of peoples and traditional communities, besides proposing measures for the implementation follow-up and assessment of these policies. Initially, made up only organs from the Government, the National Commission of Sustainable Development Peoples and Traditional Communities, it them came to through a restructuring process which counted on the active participation of various indigenous peoples and brazilian local communities. As a by-product of this process, the following were produced: a stud about the features of Brazilian Traditional Communities, in which the potential indicators for the identification of these communities are highlighted, and the Report on the First National Meeting of Brazilian Traditional Communities, during which the main demands in public policies were identified, which are directly related to specific factors for the loss of traditional knowledge associated to biodiversity. What is intended is to share the results of this study and the aforementioned Report as a subsidy to the implementation of similar initiatives by other Parties of CBD, bearing in mind the issue the the participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in the implementation of CBD, is a relevant point on the work agenda of the Convention.
